Hello, my name is...

This is a picture of me in NYC with a dalmatian from 101 Dalmatians
(one of my all-time favorite movies)
Hello, my name is Jaymie Macek and I am currently a senior at the wonderful Slippery Rock University, of Slippery Rock PA! I am studying Public Relations and Digital Media Production....yes, that's a lot of communication classes. I am also involved in two different organizations for the communication department: Lambda Pi Eta (of which I am Secretary) and Rock PRoductions (the student-run campus PR firm). I also work at Bailey Library, our university's library, helping with their PR since last November. I also work at their Resource Sharing Services center, which is where I process books that come and go from different libraries throughout the country.

I am really looking forward to our New-Media journalism class because I LOVE social media. Facebook, Twitter, you name it. I currently am in charge of one twitter account and I help run two others. I love the interaction between people, the timeliness of information and just the overall feel of the communication that happens. New-media journalism puts an interesting spin on a complicated subject: journalism. Today you don't just have to write for newspapers, you have to write for newspapers, websites, social media accounts, magazines, etc. News is no longer waiting until the next morning for the current events, news is happening now. And new-media journalism will, I hope, give me better insight to incorporating the here-and-now aspect of journalism.

Me at a Steelers game last year with
the terrible towel (GO STEELERS!)
Something that I always loved was when my mom would drive me to school and we would listen to KDKA radio in the morning. She always seemed so interested in what they had to say, and I loved to listen to her comment on what the radio station was talking about. Plus, we would always listen to their 'traffic on the five' because when the bus came, she had to go to work and needed the easiest way to get there. Today, I still listen to that radio station. Normally for the traffic, but sometimes I will listen to their news stories and sports updates. I LOVE football, and they always have some sort of Steelers coverage. (I LOVE the Steelers).

I have not always had many media sites that I would check regularly for information, but something that has caught my attention is Buzzfeed. I love the way they present their information to their audience. They have eye-catching titles, pictures, gifs, and quizzes. They really appeal to their audience, which is something that, I feel, traditional media outlets cannot grasp. You wouldn't expect the Pittsburgh Post Gazette to have a title of an online article be "9 Pet Peeves That Are Totally Justified" (I gave you a link to the site- just in case you were curious about the pet peeves). Yes, they post some things that are not really considered news, but they do post things that engage their audience. Plus, they use a lot of multimedia, which is something we will learn to do in this class. (Just for the record--they do post news articles too).

Well, that's a little bit of information about me! I know that I have captivated your attention. If you want to check me out on social media, you are more than welcome to visit my Facebook, follow me on Twitter, or connect with me on Linked-In. I may not friend you, but I definitely welcome follows and connections!

Have a great day.
